Customizing Creator
You can customize Creator to make it work better with your particular needs and constraints by setting environment variables and preferences.Environment  variables specify default paths for certain Creator operations. Preferences control the behavior of many features of Creator. The following sections describe Creator's environment variables and preferences, and explains how to change them.

Environment Variables

Environment variables are values that control various aspects of how the system and applications run. For example, some environment variables set the path that an application uses to look for specific types of files.

You can set the following Creator environment variables to control how Creator uses files. Environment variables must be set before starting Creator in order for them to take effect.

MPI_LOCATE_CREATOR
Sets the directory path to the Creator executable files. By default this is set to
/Multigen-Paradigm (Windows) or /usr/local/MultiGen-Paradigm (IRIX). If you installed Creator in a different location you must set this variable.

MPI_CREATOR_PLUGINDIR
Sets a default directory path for plugins. This is the first place Creator will search for plugins. If no plugins are found, Creator looks for a \plugins directory in the same directory as the Creator application, and if none is found, it then looks in the \MultiGen-Paradigm directory.

MGLMSERVER (IRIX only)
Sets the name of the machine that serves as the Creator license server node.

MGKEYDIR (IRIX only)
Sets the path to the Creator license key directory.

MPI_CREATOR_FLTEXTERNPATH
Sets the default directory path to externally-referenced files.

MPI_CREATOR_FLTPATH
Sets the default directory path for the File/Open command. Usually set to the directory where models are stored. You can specify multiple directories for Creator to search.

MPI_CREATOR_TERPATH
Sets the default directory path for the Terrain/Import Elevation command. Usually set to the directory where terrain data (.ded files) are stored.

MPI_CREATOR_RESOURCEPATH
Sets the default directory to palette files, such as color and material, that Creator loads when it starts up. If MPI_CREATOR_RESOURCEPATH is undefined, Creator searches the working directory. If no palette files are found, Creator loads standard Color and Material palettes from source definitions.

MPI_CREATOR_TXTPATH
Sets a default directory path to texture files. You can specify more than one directory for Creator to search. (See [U]Texture Palette Files[/U].) This becomes the default directory for the Texture palette.

MPI_CREATOR_FONTPATH
Sets the path to the 3D font directory.

MPI_CREATOR_NOSPLASH
Shows or hides the Creator splash screen on startup. If you are developing and debugging plug-ins, for example, you may want to hide the splash screen when debugging the startup code.

MPI_CREATOR_SOUNDEDITOR (IRIX only)
Associates a third party sound editor with Creator. Choosing Edit/Edit Sound automatically launches the sound editor.

GVIEWDFADPREFS
If GView is installed, sets the absolute path and file name of the dfad.prefs file that GView should use. GView requires the presence of a dfad.prefs file in order to load. The GVIEWDFADPREFS environment variable lets you specify a path to search for this file, and a file name, if it the name is not dfad.prefs. 1.Log in to Windows as Administrator if you want your environment variable settings to be effective for all users on the system. Log in as a user with administrative privileges if you want the settings to apply only to your user account.
If you do not have Administrator privileges, contact your system administrator for the Administrator password, or for a temporary Administrator account.

2.Choose Start/Settings/Control Panel to open the Control Panel window, and then double-click the System icon to open the System Properties window.
3.Click the Environment tab.

To Set Environment Variables in IRIX
Creator for IRIX includes a shell script, creator.env, that sets environment variables. You can customize this script and either paste it into your .login file (recommended) or source it just before you start up Creator.
To customize creator.env:

2. Change to the Creator home directory (usually /usr/local/MultiGen-Paradigm/creator) and open creator.env in a text editor.
The following file appears (the example below shows only part of the file):
